Picking Something Blindfolded from a Bag – So Many Possibilities! 🎲👜

Imagine the thrill of reaching your hand into a bag without knowing what’s inside. Is it soft, round, or something you can eat? This simple, playful activity is a goldmine for ESL learning, imagination, and creativity. Here’s how you can turn a humble bag and a few everyday objects into an exciting English lesson

Children reach blindly into a fabric bag full of small objects, guessing and describing them while learning English with adjectives, questions, and verbs.
Children reach blindly into a fabric bag full of small objects, guessing and describing them while learning English with adjectives, questions, and verbs.

1. Mystery Bag – The Classic Game

Goal: Practice asking and answering questions using “Is it…?” and “Yes, it is!”

All you need is a fabric bag and some small items—spoons, balls, pencils, toy animals, socks… you name it. Children take turns blindly picking an item, while the others ask questions to guess what it is:

  • “Is it round?”

  • “Can I eat it?”

After guessing, kids can describe the object in 3–4 sentences:
It’s small. It’s soft. It’s a sock.

This activity is perfect for revising adjectives and simple sentence structures.

💡 Pro tip: Encourage children to bring their own items from home, so the game is full of surprises and personal stories!

2. Mystery Bag + Adjectives

Take it a step further by focusing on describing words. Kids can feel objects and say:

  • It’s soft.

  • It’s hard.

  • It’s cold.

  • It’s long.

Then, they can write the adjectives down or even draw the object and write a simple sentence:
It’s round and red.

As an extension, play “Find something soft/long/round!” where everyone searches the classroom for items matching the description.

3. Mystery Bag + Mime 🎭

Here, a child draws an object and acts out what you do with it:

  • 🪥 Toothbrush → brushing teeth

  • ✏️ Pencil → writing

  • 🥄 Spoon → eating

Other students guess using: Are you brushing your teeth?

This version encourages speaking and introduces simple verbs in the present continuous tense in a fun, playful way.

4. Sorting & Categories Game 🧩

Once items are guessed, sort them into categories:

  • 🏠 Things in the house

  • 🎒 Things for school

  • 🍎 Things you can eat

  • 🐾 Animals

This helps children organize vocabulary and boosts thinking skills. Later, these categories can become a mini-poster for classroom display.

5. Writing Extension: “What’s in my bag?” ✏️

For a quiet writing activity, kids secretly list items in a bag:
In my bag there is something red and ___, something that makes muh and likes to eat ____, and something kids like to play with.

Then they read their sentences aloud, and others guess the items. You can do this on paper or a whiteboard.

6. Craft Add-on: Make Your Own Mini Mystery Bag 🎨

Combine language practice with creativity. Give children small paper bags and cut-out pictures or drawings of objects. They fill their bag with 3–4 items and exchange bags with a partner. The partner describe what's inside and the other guesses what it is
. This activity strengthens vocabulary while letting kids express themselves artistically.

The possibilities are endless when you let children explore blindfolded, guess, describe, and act. From vocabulary practice to creative expression, a simple bag can turn into a world of discovery. So grab a bag, pick something blindfolded, and watch the magic unfold! ✨

How to make badges 🏆

🔹 How to Create Lesson-Specific Badges

  1. Pick the goal → What do you want learners to achieve? (e.g., follow directions, ask questions in English, act silly confidently, help others).

  2. Name the badge creatively → Use fun, kid-friendly titles that match the theme of the lesson.

    • Direction lesson → “Direction Master Certificate”

    • Creative task → “Super Skill Creator”

    • Acting silly / taking risks → “Weirdness Badge”

    • Helping → “Witch Helper badge”

  3. Design the badge

    • A4 divided into 4 parts

    • Each badge has:

      • Title at the top

      • Fun icon/illustration (compass, wand, alien, star…)

      • Goals to archieve and check

      • Leopold's signature

      • Room for the child's name

      • Date

  4. Hand out & use → Kids collect ticks/stickers until the badge is full = they “own” the certificate.

      • “Which superpower would you choose – invisibility or super strength?” 💪

      • “Who in the class is fastest?” 🏃‍♂️

  2. Photo Challenge 📸

    • Brainstorm topics together and let teens take photos with their phones. Everyone is busy and engaged.

    • Example photo prompts:

      • “Show something that looks magical” ✨

      • “Find a superhero pose” 🦸‍♂️

      • “Capture something really tall or small” 📏

      • “Your favorite color in the room” 🌈

      3. Jump high – who jumps the highest? ⬆️

      4. Balance a book while walking across the room 📚

      5. Quick relay race 🏁with balls on a spoon while carrying it in the mouth

  4. Drawing Exercises ✏️

    • Draw blindfolded – others guess what it is 👀

Starting to Teach Out There: Finding Your Own Universe in English Teaching

How to Teach English Creatively Without Much Assistance

Teaching English on your own, outside the comfort of a structured school, can feel both exciting and daunting. When resources are limited and guidance is sparse, the challenge is real—but so is the opportunity to discover your own teaching universe ✨👽🪐.

Embrace Creativity
You don’t need elaborate materials or a fully stocked classroom to make learning engaging. Start by observing your learners: their interests, daily lives, and motivations. Use what’s around you—stories 📖, local objects 🪄, simple games 🎲—as your springboard for lessons.

Lesson Plans and Connection
Creating your own lesson plans is not about perfection; it’s about connection. Begin with a clear goal for each session 🎯. Then, design activities that allow learners to explore language through listening 👂, speaking 🗣️, reading 📖, and writing ✍️.

Crafts 🎨
Crafts are especially important in my teaching because they combine creativity and language practice. On one hand, students can express themselves through drawing, cutting, or modeling, which helps them connect words to action and imagination. On the other hand, crafts can also encourage speaking: describing their creations, telling a story about them, or practicing vocabulary out loud. That’s why “Crafts” appears twice in the pic above – they are a versatile tool for both creativity and communication.

Experiments and Playful Exploration 🧪✨
Experiments, mini-projects, or discovery games spark curiosity. These activities teach language in context and encourage problem-solving, teamwork, and critical thinking.

Storytelling 📚✨
Storytelling is one of the most powerful ways to make English come alive. Stories capture students’ attention, evoke emotions, and help them learn words and structures in context. You can invent your own stories, include Leopold or other characters, or adapt familiar fairy tales and stories. Through role-play, dialogues, or little performances, children become active participants and practice language playfully.

Find Your Universe 🌌
Every teacher develops a style, a voice, and a way to make learning memorable. Maybe your universe is storytelling 🐉, art 🎨, or interactive games 🎲. Let your personality shine 🌟. The more authentic you are, the more your students will engage and grow.

Leopold and Your Characters 👽✨
My teaching journey started with Leopold. It doesn’t have to be Leopold for you—it can be anything: a talking animal 🐶, another child 👧👦, or a fantasy character 🐉🌟. The key is to create a universe that sparks curiosity, imagination, and joy.

Flashcards with AI 🧠💡
If creating flashcards feels overwhelming, AI can help. Start lesson by lesson. Your flashcard database will grow naturally, and you’ll be astonished by how many cards you have after just a few lessons 📚✨.

AI-Generated Songs 🎵🤖
Tools like Suno.com allow you to generate music for free classroom use. Be careful: for commercial use, you cannot use the songs you already created, as licenses cannot be obtained afterward.

Flashcard Games 💻🃏
Flashcard games can be easily generated online or made yourself. A simple stack of matching cards—words, icons, or drawings—is enough. Lesson by lesson, your collection grows into a rich set of interactive materials.

Summary 🌟👽✨
Teaching English creatively without much assistance is about imagination, starting small, and letting your teaching universe grow. Use crafts, experiments, stories, games, and AI tools to make lessons playful and meaningful. Your authenticity will inspire learners, and little by little, you’ll build a rich, engaging learning experience that is entirely your own.
